¡Bienvenidos a Dímelo Caminando!

My goal here is to help you learn and explore the wondrously diverse Spanish of Latin America; to not only try to understand how language reflects a people’s connection to their homeland, but also discover in different ways how each country and its people give life to their language and culture.

I truly believe that when you take on the challenge of learning a second language — of learning Spanish — that language and everything it represents becomes alive within you. And from there the doors shift open to a whole new world that spans more than two continents, 21 different countries and 400 million people.

Over the past few years this life has inspired me to travel to and live in Colombia, Ecuador and Chile in order to create connections with the people, live the culture as a local, and study language as it’s spoken day-to-day. This website and the Dímelo Caminando Podcast is where I aim to share everything I’ve learned in the hopes that you can learn too – and we can all build together.

Within each episode we explore different cultural, linguistic and historic themes, as well as regional speech, idiomatic expressions, and popular language through interviews and short audio conversations in authentic, conversational Spanish with experts, local slang masters, and native speakers from different regions of Latin America. Moreover, we cover learning tips, vocabulary, as well as mini lessons related to each show’s conversation — you can read along with each podcast’s conversation transcript and notes.

Currently, we have conversational Spanish podcasts from a few different regions of Colombia, and – soon – more episodes based in Ecuador and Chile.

Latin America Travel Photography and Spanish Language Learning by Jamie Killen

“I’d give everything I know for half of what I don’t know.” (Bogotá, Colombia)

Overall, I like to think of Dímelo Caminando as an ongoing Spanish language learner’s diary – a cultural and linguistic impression of some of the places and people I’ve had the privilege of meeting en mis caminos through Latin America.

I aim not only to inspire a love for travel and encourage wanderlust in you, but also urge you to pursue a deeper understanding of different cultures through language –  to help create more meaningful connections with people of different backgrounds, and ultimately, yourself.

As German medical doctor, polyglot, and lifetime language learner Bernd Sebastien Kamps once wrote,

“Languages are formidable windows to the beauties and mysteries of the human odyssey. Pushing them wide open is among the most gratifying moments in life.”

Un poco más sobre mí:

My name’s Jamie Killen.

I grew up in a monolingual household in the oh-so green and oh-so tree covered city of Ann Arbor, Michigan. (If you got a mitten, put it up!)

I first came into real contact with the Spanish language by trying to defend the honor of mi preciosa madre from the most creative, vulgar insults thrown at me by latin american line cooks and dishwashers of various kitchens I’ve worked in over the years. After learning just about every Mexican grosería under the sun, I found myself wanting more.

And then in winter of 2009 I took my first ever “official” Spanish class at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. From that moment on I was hooked.

Along with my university studies, I quickly began to consume every Spanish language learning resource I could get my hands on, and I went on to achieve my bachelors degree in Spanish and Journalism, graduating with the Fall class of 2011 (What, what!).

Since then, I’ve traveled, worked, and photographed all over Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and to a lesser extent Argentina and Peru — officially marking five of 21 spanish-speaking countries I plan on visiting throughout my lifetime as a traveling language learner.

Currently, the road has brought me back to the borough of Brooklyn in New York City where I continue to work on my Spanish everyday, make photographs and create content for this website.

If you have any questions related to spanish language learning, the Dímelo Caminando podcast, travel, photography or anything else — Please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can send me a message through the contact page or shoot me an email me at Jamie@tellittomewalking.com. And if you interested, you can also find more of my photography work here

Muchisísimas gracias por leer, escuchar, y caminar conmigo.

Gratitud hasta el cansancio…

Este Amor No Tiene Fin…
